ENL news
Shortly before February vacation 30 students in ENL (English as a New Language) at Eagle Point Elementary School received UNICEF Kid Power Bands. These UNICEF fitness watches encourage students to become more active. The fitness watches count the steps and these steps are converted into points. The points then release Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) packets for malnourished children around the world. Ten points, or 24,000 steps, unlock one RUTF. 150 RUTFs saves a child’s life. Our goal is to save 10 lives by the end of the school year.
Not only do the students improve their own health and the health of others, they will have an opportunity to learn about some of the countries that UNICEF helps and the importance of being a Global Citizen. What is really inspiring about this is that most of the students are refugees and immigrants. Some of whom are from the same countries that the UNICEF RUTFs are being donated to. Now they have an opportunity to help others that are less fortunate. After the first two weeks, we have helped to release more than 100 RUTFs. This program is offered at no cost to the students and no cost to the school. Watches are not waterproof and should not be worn to swim or bathe. Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family's Journey is told in both English and Arabic. It is the story of Rama and her family as they flee war-torn Syria in search of safety and hope. Her is some of the artwork that the students at Eagle Point created after reading the story. For more information on the book please go to http://www.orcabook.com/Stepping-Stones-P1227.aspx.

2014-2015 School Year
We also completed our study of names. We read The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi and Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. We learned that our names are the first gifts that our parents give us. Our names are important and are something that we should always treasure. Thank you for all of your help with researching the children's names. We have a beautiful display in the first floor back hallway. Next time you are in school, please take some time to read the interesting stories about our children's names. I learned so much about the students.
Please check when the weather is bad to see if school is closed or delayed. You can check the local news channels and their website. You can sign up to receive texts and emails when there are closings or delays at
